LIGHTNING BOLT ANNOUNCES RE-LAUNCH IN BRAZIL

Soon to celebrate its 40th anniversary, Lightning Bolt announces its re-launch in Brazil. Originally founded in 1971 by Gerry Lopez and Jack Shipley in Hawaii, the brand redefined surfing with the development of revolutionary Surfboards designed to conquer the huge tubes of Pipeline.
Operating under a licensing agreement in Brazil since 1977, Lightning Bolt USA assumes full responsibility for the operations in this country reaffirming its positioning of an iconic surf brand, a pure source. Both committed to its original core values and pursuing innovation, the brand is strong in 14 countries and relies on heavy-weight ambassadors such as Rory Russell, living legend from the 70’s Hawaiian surf lifestyle. Russell is a two-time champion of the Pipeline Masters and is legendary for shaping one of the most emblematic Lightning Bolt surfboards ever, the Pipeliner.
Jonathan Paskowitz, the brand’s President in the United States, recognizes Brazil as a major player within the global economy, holding special relevance in the surf world. “We have very high expectations, while recognizing it is a big challenge to perform in a market running with established players. We believe that Lightning Bolt will represent an alternative to those who are longing for the original soul surfing values.

Lightning Bolt has a strong, solid history of success in Brazil, built during the eighties and nineties, which makes it a natural market for the brand. We’re thrilled to see how consumers, surfers and retailers cherish the brand.” considers Paskowitz.
Lightning Bolt presents the Men’s Collection debuting in early 2011, utilizing primarily domestic production with a few imported items. Lightning Bolt apparel will be distributed nationwide in surf and specialty shops.

Israel Rocha, new team rider

As we are now preparing our reentry in Brazil, we are stoked to announce new brazilian team rider, Israel Rocha.
Israel Rocha is 26 anos, started surfing 14 years ago and he lives in the south of Brazil, Florianópolis, really close to one of the best surf spots in the area, Praia do Santinho. That’s the spot where they have most of the local contest and even WQS and Pro Junior events.
His surf style is classic and he likes manoeuvres like tail slides, snaps, off the lips and smooth cut backs. He’s not a new school fan. “I like to enjoy all the wave line and do it till the end”
He defines himself as a very peaceful guy, as he loves nature and also he’s a fan of yoga, running and football.
Right now Israel is on a surftrip in South Africa till 7-June, and his main anchors will be Plettenberg Bay, on the first month, and then the famous Jeffreys Bay till the end of the trip.
His first impressions about the trip are mainly about the fauna “Although almost everybody talks about the huge fauna diversity in South Africa, I am really surprised with the harmony that I found between the nature and people”, says him.
Yesterday, when he was surfing perfect waves in “Loockout Point”, Plettenberg Bay, he saw about 40 or 50 dolphins.
But right after he got really scared, as he saw a giant black shadow below him in the water. He thought it was a white shark, very common there, but then he saw there were two big ray fish. When he got back home, he met lots of monkeys.
Soon we will publish more photos and stories about his surftrip.

Riding the biggest surfboard

There’s always lots of discussions about the biggest waves ever surfed. But small attention is given to those who try to ride the biggest boards. This year Rico de Souza, a brazilian surfer that already owned the guiness record for riding a wave with the biggest surfboard (30 feet), is trying to improve it, and will try now with a 31 feet surfboard.
This will happen in the Longboard Classic in Jacaraipé (Brazil) between 11th and 13th June.
Ambition is never too much.
